Campaign Finance Reform

“Focused on OUR Future means protecting the integrity of our elections and leaders!”

Missourians and Americans, in general, are sick and tired of politicians ignoring their needs and being disconnected from the issues that face the typical worker. With Supreme Court decisions in the past decade, this divide has gotten stronger as more and more corporations and special interest groups funnel funds by the millions to candidates and elected officials who are willing to “do their bidding”.

What is the state of our current campaign finance system?

  • Citizens United-This group and other organizations like it have fought for, and won, Supreme Court Decisions allowing them to contribute unlimited dollars for “independent expenditures”. This allows for PACs and other partisan groups to spend wildly to ensure chosen candidates are elected.
  • A Block for Working Class Candidates-It costs on average of $1.6 million dollars to win a seat in the U.S. House. The costs have skyrocketed in recent years because of the removal of limits and FEC Control. This leads to great candidates who have solid ideas and pure agendas being pushed out by wealthy candidates backed by wealthy allies and corporations.
  • Exhausted Voters-Voters quickly face “political burnout” during elections due to the relentless advertisements for candidates and issues. 72 percent of which are funded by outside groups that were previously prohibited from spending money on political ads.
  • A lack of true representation-In Missouri’s 3rd Congressional District, our current rep holds millions in campaign coffers, mostly from corporate and special interest donors, largely big banks and insurance firms. The facts are widely available for public consumption through the FEC but many voters are not aware that they can view this information.

How can we protect our elections?

  • Fight to End Citizens United-Previous decisions from the Supreme Court have stated that money is free speech and that corporations are viewed as people under the law. A constitutional amendment declaring this as untrue is the first step towards getting big money out of our elections.

  • Public Funding of Our Elections-Publicly funded elections will allow well-vetted candidates who are qualified and truly have the best interest of the public at heart to hold positions. It will provide increased access to the ballot to those who genuinely want a chance to serve.
  • Unite the Working Class-Grassroots campaigns, such are ours, attempt to connect directly with voters with real need for support by their representatives. By contributing small amounts to campaigns with heart, the working class can gain true representation.

  • VOTE-The right to vote is one power that cannot be bought by corporations. When average Missourians come together and realize that their current leaders are not acting in their best interest, the best thing we can do is vote those leaders out of office.

The myths on Campaign Finance

  • Publicly Funded Elections would mean anyone could run-Shouldn’t anyone who wants to serve and has ideas to support our residents have that chance? As it is now, candidates are forced to spend significant amounts of their time seeking donations to fund campaigns and defeat powerful dark money opponents. A change like this would mean candidates would be able to spend more time understanding the needs of residents and working on true policy ideas.
  • Super PACs do not contribute to candidates-They are barred from contributing directly to the candidate but can spend unlimited amounts of money in support of, or against candidates.
  • The average voter cannot monitor a candidate’s financial activities-Wrong! For Federal elections, the FEC collects information on all campaign contributions and expenses for candidates. This is published and updated regularly for public access on their website. You can tell who is supporting your candidate and how they are spending their money.

Changes to our Campaign Finance system will mean better leaders in OUR Future!
