Climate Change

“Focused on OUR Future means ensuring the survival of our planet!”

We are seeing the effects of climate change all around us each and every day. Yet, many politicians continue to dismiss scientific evidence and facts as propaganda. Yet, many of the studies on climate change are conducted by independent organizations who gain no profits or benefit from misleading the citizens of the world.

What Climate Change issues are we facing?

  • The Earth’s average surface temperature continues to rise-Numerous scientists and experts have proven that since 1906, the average surface temperature of Earth has risen by .5 degrees. The rate of growth has doubled in the last 50 years with an increase in greenhouse gas emission fueled by consumption of fossil fuels.
  • Natural disasters are fueled by environmental changes-Significant changes in the atmosphere’s warmth leads to increase evaporation, which, in turn, leads to stronger hurricanes, increased flooding rates, and even higher snow fall rates in winters. We continue to see unprecedented heat waves, droughts, and wildfires that coincide with both.
  • Facing the loss of entire species-When the environment changes dramatically around our wildlife, they are forced to either adapt or move to new areas. As the human population expands, the ability for other species to move into suitable areas becomes blocked by the need for human expansion into the same areas. Simultaneously, with rapid climate change, species are often unable to adapt quickly enough to ensure survival.
  • Economic burdens of Climate Change-A 2018 report by 13 Federal agencies details a clear impact to the economy of the United States due to climate change. With the added natural disasters causing an increased need for funding for critical repairs and rebuilding efforts, added to the continued crop failures and crumbling infrastructures causing reduced exports and disrupted supply chains, the GDP could by reduced by 1/10 in the next century.

What can we do?

  • Acknowledge science as fact-Politicians who continue to dismiss facts provided by independent scientists are influencing others to believe in falsehoods. True leaders acknowledge the issues and attempt to work toward solutions that will benefit our future. When prominent and vocal leaders accept evidence presented to them, the general population will quickly follow suit.
  • Move towards the Green New Deal-This exceptional idea focuses on the transition to renewable energy systems and modernized economic systems. By investing in solutions to benefit our environmental impact, not only can we protect our Earth for generations to come, but we also create new jobs and industries and strengthen our economy.
  • Remove corporate control-Corporations, such as “Big Oil” providers, are often the most vocal opponents to climate change initiatives. This is largely due to the impact on the one thing that matters most to them, their profits. Encouraging these big players to accept guidance can also lead them to additional profits as they tailor their efforts towards new sources and methods.

  • Make modest individual changes-As individuals, we can make small changes in our daily lives that can help us in the future. The cost of renewable energy sources continues to decline and become more readily available. We can also buy products from local farmers and support small businesses who hold smaller carbon footprints. Simultaneously, a focus on reduced vehicle use or selecting low emission options can have lasting impacts.

The Myths On Climate Change

  • Climate Change is a future problem-Using this as an excuse to avoid change will have detrimental impacts for future generations. We have been given the great pleasure of life on this Earth, surely, we want our descendants to have the same access. At the same time, many of the impacts are facing us as we speak with increased natural disasters and crop damages, just to name a few.
  • Other countries emit more greenhouse gases-Partially true. Countries like China do emit more greenhouse gases than the U.S., but they also invest more in renewable energy sources than we do.
  • Renewable energy is just a money-making ploy- Solar and wind power are some of the cheapest ways of producing electricity and the cost continues to fall. Not making changes now will be far more costly in the long run.
