Education

“Focused on OUR Future means investing in our youth!”

Dennis is a product of our public education system, having grown up in a low-income urban setting in North St. Louis County. Because of this start, Dennis experienced first-hand how the broken education system in Missouri penalizes students who live in lower-income localities. He also realized that our teachers and education staff are truly investing in the future of our country.

What are some of the issues facing our education system?

  • Budget to value each student equally-The public-school financing program in Missouri remains skewed in that districts with higher assessed valuations hold an advantage over poverty-stricken districts. We assign a dollar value to the education of each student in Missouri. This practice is acceptable, as long as every student is of equal value!
  • Support Our Teachers-Missouri ranks 39th nationally in average teacher salary, at just $48,925. The starting salary is even worse at just $31,842. Simultaneously, they often pay out of pocket for supplies and work long hours supporting our students.
  • Private School Vouchers-Vouchers are public payments to allow students to attend private schools. This takes away from funds available for our public schools while being unavailable to all of our youth. At the same time, we lose transparency to how those public funds are spent once they reach the private entities.
  • Affordable Higher Education-In Missouri, 58% of our college graduates carry student loan debt with the average debt totaling almost $30,000!

How can we better invest in our youth?

  • Invest in our educators-An increase in the average salary of teachers and staff coupled with strengthened pension plans and a lasting support for social security, we can retain exceptional teachers and continue to entice talented graduates to enter the field.
  • Level the funding playing field-A fair-share tax plan will ask the wealthier citizens and corporations to pay a fair share towards the education of ALL Missourians, not just those in their surrounding area.
  • An End to Vouchers-Ending vouchers will mean more available public dollars to the schools our state and localities are truly responsible for. Private schools are businesses, which should not be supported with tax dollars.

  • Free Community College-With monitoring to ensure that students are active and successful in studies, a free community college program would remove 2 years of debt for a typical 4-year degree. This would immediately reduce the average debt load for students who choose this route.
  • Strong Loan Forgiveness Programs-Graduates who commit to public service or careers dedicated to the support of our nation should have the ability to live without the added worry and stress of substantial financial burdens. A plan that forgives portions of debt with years of service ensures all our futures!
  • Support of educators’ rights-By continuing to support the rights of educators and staff to unite under strong unions, we provide them with the power to negotiate fair wages and better working conditions

The myths on Education

  • Vouchers provide free choice-Wrong! Students who receive vouchers cannot go where they please. Private schools still require those students to meet admission criteria and be accepted with little cause for rejection required.
  • Missouri already values all students the same-Actually the public funding model currently used is a complex equation that takes into account the ability of the surrounding area to fund their schools, and the needs of the students who attend the district.
  • Teachers work less than most and have a paid summer vacation-Nope! With all the extras such as grading, after-school activities and meetings, on average teachers work 50-60 hours a week. Some even more than that. Often, they are paid on a 9-month term and have to take smaller paychecks to ensure that they still receive a check over the summers.
  • Any free college would cause students not to care-First, many current students are forced to take jobs on the side to ensure that debts are kept in check. By removing this concern and enforcing strict guidelines for progress, students will be able to focus on their schoolwork and worry less about their future.

A strong public education system creates the leaders of OUR future!
