Veterans

“Focused on OUR Future means standing with those who fought for our present!”

Freedom continues to be one of the founding principles of our nation. The freedom we experience in our great country draws many across the world to seek refuge and opportunity here. That freedom was paid for with the lives of our service members past and present. We, as a nation, owe our veterans the security and stability they have earned. Actually, we owe them so much more! It’s because of their sacrifices that we’re able to live our lives in freedom and liberty.

What issues face our Veterans?

  • Veterans’ physical health needs-Long delays in care and excessive errors continue to plague our VA system. These struggles and many others lead to reduced access to vital treatments and quality providers for those who fought for us.
  • A mental health epidemic-PTSD and the traumas that follow are detrimental to the well-being of our Veterans. 20 die by suicide every day in our country.
  • Support for disabled veterans-Veterans disabled during service often experience some of the most traumatic and unimaginable injuries. Rehabilitation barely scratches the surface of their needs. Many require constant assistance and care for years to come.
  • Protection and stability-We currently have over 23,000 of our heroes who are without shelter on any given night. This is an unacceptable statistic given what they put on the line for us.

How can we help?

  • Rebuild and strengthen our VA system-VA facilities are in need of dramatic physical and institutional improvements. Legislators have ignored the issues in the VA for far too long. A proposal which requires all elected officials to receive medical care through the VA, may force elected officials to finally take notice and make necessary changes.
  • Provide deepened support for returning vets-Readjustment to civilian life, especially after the lasting impact of war, requires significant support. Our veterans need a wholistic plan which focuses on mental health issues and provides for ongoing support at all stages.

  • Increase research funding for common issues-More research is necessary for PTSD and Traumatic Brain Injury, as well as the basic impacts of transitioning from military life back into civilian culture. This will provide a basis for improved treatment options for generations to come.
  • Ensure housing options for all-Far too many buildings are currently condemned or abandoned. A system to ensure these are refurbished for veterans in need of sufficient shelter is critical to addressing the homelessness crisis.
  • Support those groups who help our heroes-As individuals we should remember and thank all organizations who support our veterans as their top mission. Expanded support for local VFWs, DAVs and American Legions will have lasting impacts.

The myths on Veterans

  • Vets and their families have access to free healthcare-Many veterans actually struggle with affordable healthcare just like civilians. Only 40 percent qualify for healthcare through the VA. Others rely on Tricare, Medicaid or Medicare and still one in 10 veterans under 65 remain uninsured.
  • Job markets are great for service members-The unemployment rate for veterans was at 3.6 percent. An estimated 330,000 are actively looking for work.

The sacrifice of Veterans gives us the opportunity to focus on OUR future!
