Workers’ Rights

“Focused on OUR Future means supporting the laborers who help build it!”

As the product of a Union-made family, and a former Union laborer himself, Dennis understands the importance of the rights of workers to unite and show a solidified voice for proper wages, benefits, and working conditions. Only when the working class comes together can we really cause change in our country.

What issues face our workers?

  • Livable wages and increasing wage gaps-CEOs now make 278 times the rate of an average worker, while minimum wage levels in our country remain so low that basic needs are left unmet.
  • Access to healthcare and other benefits-Companies focused on profits are continuously seeking ways to improve the bottom line by reducing benefits for laborers and insisting that employees cover a higher percentage of their healthcare expenses, with deductibles and coinsurance rates increasing faster than wages.
  • Safety and health in our workplaces-OSHA continues to report staggering facts regarding the safety of our workers. Every day, 6,000 people die due to workplace injury or accidents in our world. At the same time, hazardous materials lead to 10% of all skin cancers and about a quarter of injuries are due to overexertion with employees being tasked to handle activities outside their physical ability.
  • Protection for the future-Pension programs across our country continue to reduce in staggering numbers, while many legislators fight to reduce Social Security benefits and less and less employers match, or even provide, 401k options for employees. This severely threatens the future of our laborers as they progress into retirement age.

    What should be done?

    • Increase the federal minimum wage-In rural Missouri, a single adult without children will need to earn over $17 per hour by 2024 just to cover basic living essentials. We must raise the minimum wage to a livable standard and provide for regular increases based on inflation rates.
    • Strengthen Social Security-Our workers rely on the stability of this program to protect their future needs. With the reduction in pensions and the volatility of investments, plans to privatize Social Security put all our financial futures in jeopardy.
    • Reward companies who support unionization-With added tax benefits offered to companies who support their employees’ rights to collective bargaining, we can incentivize big business by appealing to their basic interest, the bottom line profit.

    • Penalize companies who outsource U.S. jobs-An increased corporate tax rate on businesses with profits created overseas will decrease the appeal of perceived savings for outsourcing. At the same time, government contracts should be limited to wholly U.S. entities as much as possible.
    • Fight to end workplace discrimination for ALL reasons-Missouri still allows employers to terminate based on sexual orientation. This must end. At the same time, the state’s At Will employment statures place far too much of the burden of proof on the employee for any discrimination claims.

    The myths on Workers’ Rights

    • Laws already protect employees-In fact, many laws are partial to the employers. Employers are not required by law to provide breaks by Federal Law. Nor do they require paid time off or require justifiable reasons for terminations. Many of the benefits we now take for granted were fought for by labor unions.
    • Businesses value employees-While there are some outstanding businesses who truly acknowledge and support their employees, many still enact rules and policies which are detrimental to the well-being of employees and they focus instead on a competitive labor force.
